I AM A SENSITIVE ARTIST

Dear Guest,

Thank you for coming to see, I Am A Sensitive Artist, presenting work by nine Chicago gallerists, including: Audrey Nicolaides, Joshua Johnson, Maisie Corl, Mary Eleanor Wallace, Megan Jean Foy, Peter Anastos, Sharmarke Ahmed, Sharon Zhang, and Wendy Kroy.

I hope that during your viewing of the work, you can take into consideration three “archetypes” of people each with their own distinct attitudes; one being the curator, a second being the art, and third being the artist.

*The curator is death and immaterial. While it is aware of the material; because of its inherent distance, it is incapable of taking part in material endeavors. The curator however makes waste to, manipulates, and structures the material. (e.g. a business man, a member of the Senate, Jimmy Lovine)

*The art is breath and material. It is unaware of the immaterial; and is incapable of separating itself amongst other material things. The art is inherent and honest to a fault. (e.g. a muse, an honest worker trying to make ends meet, Nicole Polizzi)

*The artist is thought and vessel. It is all at once aware of the material and immaterial; and is capable of separating itself between the two. The artist is generative. (e.g. a guerilla, a biochemist on the verge of discovering gene editing, Outkast)

With love and admiration for those present and participating tonight,

Nico Ramirez Rosas

Attitudes of the curator, the art, and the artist, respectively:

Todo es hermoso y constante,

Todo es música y razón,

Y todo, como el diamante,

Antes que luz es carbón.

Yo vengo de todas partes,

Y hacia todas partes voy:

Arte soy entre las artes,

En los montes, monte soy.

Yo soy un hombre sincero

De donde crece la palma.

Y antes de morirme quiero

Echar mis versos del alma.

(c. Versos Sencillos (1891), José Martí (1853-1895))
